Users Coming Off Slimming Injections Regain Pounds Four Times Faster Compared to Dieters

Weight management often requires long-term strategies.

Fresh analysis indicates that individuals who discontinue new GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain lost weight much more quickly than those who stop traditional diet and exercise plans.

Research printed in a major medical journal shows that while obese individuals can lose a large proportion of their total mass while on the medication, the mass comes back at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.

"People purchasing such medications must be informed of the potential of quick rebound weight gain when the medication is stopped," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of recovery suggests a return to pre-treatment mass within about one and a half years.

Comparing Therapies

The research, which reviewed dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the outcomes of the injectable medications with other pills.

Researchers point out that people who lose weight through dieting usually experience a less rapid creep back—approximately 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.

The Reason for the Quick Regain

Experts propose the mechanism of the injections explains the heightened weight return.

These medications mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate appetite.

"Long-term administration of the hormone concentrations several times higher than normal might result in the body to produce less of its own natural hormone, and may also diminish sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' means appetite is unsuppressed, making excessive eating much more probable."

A Chronic Condition?

Medical guidelines recommend the injections for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians argue that, given the high risk of relapse, the treatment is often life-long.

This view is echoed by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "emphasize the long-term nature of obesity," comparing it to managing conditions like diabetes.

User Accounts

People who have discontinued the jabs report a powerful return of appetite.

"It was like something that goes on and you're instantly ravenous," described one woman.

This difficulty is compounded if patients have not established lasting dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.

Widespread Interest

Recent estimates indicate that millions of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with desire being substantial.

  • Use is more common among women than males.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest level of interest.
  • A large proportion obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

In conclusion, researchers caution that while these medications are potent tools for weight loss, they are not a permanent fix and lasting health benefits hinges on combined behavioural management.
