Royal Air Force Typhoon jets have operated alongside French aircraft in a combined operation against an underground arms cache in Syria employed by the IS group, as stated by the British defence ministry.

The location, pinpointed through intelligence, was assessed as storing arms and explosives, the announcement noted, and was situated in hills just above Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our fighter planes used precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to target a several entry passages down to the depot... early reports indicate the strike was effective," officials stated.

There was no evidence of any civilian impact in the attack on Saturday evening and every plane involved returned to base without incident, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon fighters were supported by a Voyager tanker plane.

IS - alternatively referred to as ISIS - established militant control over large swathes of Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This operation demonstrates British leadership, and commitment to operate in unison with our allies, to eliminate any re-emergence of Daesh and their violent and radical beliefs in the region," Britain's Defence Chief the Defence Secretary remarked.

British military aircraft have performed surveillance missions over Syrian airspace to "forestall any attempted comeback" of the group following its routing at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I extend gratitude to every member of the UK armed forces participating in this strike for their professionalism and their valour," Healey said. "Including them were a great many UK service members stationed over the holidays. This operation, to remove terrorist threats who threaten our security, demonstrates how UK forces are ready to step up, throughout the year, protecting the UK at home and powerful internationally."

During December, the American forces executed what it termed a "massive strike" against IS targets in Syria, following an attack resulted in the deaths of two US troops and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The United Nations reports Daesh still boasts between 5,000 and 7,000 fighters in Iraq and Syria.
