Critical Role Campaign 4 Reveals the Fighters Party

Ever since the premiere of Campaign 4, recently appointed game master Brennan Mulligan has kept fans guessing with deep backstory, a wide array of personalities, and a gripping narrative featuring angels, evil spirits, and dark forces expanding in influence within the urban setting.

Note: Spoilers for Episode 3 of the new season lie ahead.

The Soldiers Table Introduced

The third episode finished on a major cliffhanger and introduced the premier party of adventurers who will separate from the main group to begin their independent quest, apart from the remaining groups.

The Soldiers table consists of Teor (brought to life by Travis Willingham), Thimble (Laura Bailey), Tyranny (Whitney), the cleric (Sam), and Kattigan Vale (Robbie Daymond).

Why Split the Party?

Given a large ensemble, it was clear from the start that having everyone at a single group would be unfeasible.

Hence, the opening chapters of Campaign 4 serve as an Overture, connecting the characters’ stories before branching into three smaller tables: Fighters, Schemers, and Seekers.

Characteristics of the Combat Party

Per Brennan Lee Mulligan, the warrior group is for players who prefer a typically action-packed fight-heavy story mode where diplomatic options are scarce.

Initially, characters like the squeamish cleric the cleric might appear out of place, but the events of the third episode make it clear why these particular heroes are ideally matched for the warrior group.

Why They Must Go

For one thing, the team knows exactly where to proceed after a intense opening clash with The Crow Keepers.

An old friend of the deceased character—whose passing kicked off the campaign’s events—exploited the enemy for his own means, entering Thjazi’s hideout, attacking Thimble, and stealing all the enchanted items to dispose of.

The antagonist then settled his obligations and escaped to a Halovar stronghouse in Gormalay, Timmony, beyond the urban center, with Cyd hot on his heels.

Character Drivers

Additionally, each character has a individual motive to depart the urban setting:

  • Thimble, as Thjazi’s partner and best friend, wants retribution.
  • Kattigan knows the region and advises that it is a dangerous place.
  • The warrior and Wicander, having defied his house’s orders to execute the target and instead freed him, have nowhere else to go.
  • Yet, their status as key figures in House Halovar could enable the party access locations they normally couldn’t.
  • Additionally, The grateful character pledged a unbreakable promise to The cleric for his salvation and will now accompany him anywhere.

Fugitives

In addition, all of them are hunted by the powers that control the city for a variety of reasons, making remaining behind too risky:

  • Thimble and The character are recognized lawbreakers.
  • The warrior and Wicander turned against House Halovar and the horde of evil beings they are allied with.
  • Teor is wanted dead by the family.

This leaves them little choice but to travel to the remote area in search of the antagonist.

Upcoming Developments

According to episode three’s follow-up content, we learn that the warrior group will be absent next week, leaving the other eight participants to assemble the Questers and Planners tables.

Fans can anticipate discovering which characters will be where in Campaign 4’s final introductory chapter, streaming live on next week.
